She wants to tell him, but something is stopping her still. The situation that the audience knows more than the characters about Scully’s pregnancy is palpable in the opening and closing scenes with Scully and Doggett. It’s evocative of Duane Barry and Pusher, where Mulder was the eyes and ears and Scully was the voice that kept him tethered. This is the first case they have worked together alone. They have stood (or lay) side by side shooting at metal men and bat-men. He’s cut a giant slug out of her neck at her instruction previously, and rescued her from the middle of nowhere on his own in Roadrunners. She trusts his work capability to be part of the team in the tunnel. Scully is starting to show that she trusts Doggett, and not just as a work partner. He trusts that she knows what she’s asking of him. Remember all the times Mulder asked Scully do to something in the early seasons, and she did so, but she questioned what he would be doing in the meantime? Doggett doesn’t ask what Scully will be doing. He’s a soldier, and he considers Scully his senior partner. It’s a gift how much Doggett just accepts Scully’s absence from his side. I got something far better, though: Doggett and Scully working as a team using their strengths, and not Scully trying to be Mulder. I was hoping the title referred to the legend of the woman with snakes for hair. The Medusa organism sparks the way train tracks do SCULLY: Deaths for which there may be many explanations or for which an explanation may be hard to find. MELNICK: Equivocal? SCULLY: Look, Agent Doggett, not a criminal charge is going to stick. SCULLY: (on radio) Get out of there, Agent Doggett.ĭOGGETT: (on radio) I can only hope, Agent Scully. SCULLY: (on radio) Agent Doggett, you shouldn’t be moving at all.ĭOGGETT: (on radio) Agent Scully, what do you want me to do? SCULLY: (on radio) I’m going to send a quarantine unit down to get you, Agent Doggett, okay? I want you to stay right where you are.ĭOGGETT: (on radio) I’m moving as fast as I can. But my partner is down there, and I fear the worst. SCULLY: (on radio) Agent Doggett, what happened? Can you hear me?ĭOGGETT: Agent Scully knows what she’s doing. BIANCO: I wonder why she sent you down here instead of coming herself.ĭOGGETT: It’s the right call. But I wish somebody would tell me what the hell I’m supposed to be looking for.ĭoggett calls Scully Songbird over the radioĭOGGETT: Yeah, I know her. What I need down there are eyes and ears.ĭOGGETT: Okay. SCULLY: You’ve got capable people with you, Agent Doggett. Lyle has been discharged.ĭOGGETT: Yeah, but I’m just tag along here. SCULLY: Well, the kid is with Social Services and plastic surgeons are working on Melnick and Bianco and Dr. Scully won’t risk bringing up an unknown contaminant by breaking quarantineĭoggett says he’s getting a hazmat team down to the tunnel to bring up the CDC worker and the injured engineer
